About
"I’ve always been interested in people. I go to bars and other places of social gathering to find my subjects. I start distorting them. There is a lot of intimacy at that moment. I try to use that as a catalyst, taking these ideas to new levels of perception. I’ve noticed that ever since I was a kid, I always paid lots of attention to the body and its effect on the space that surrounds it. The body is a vase full of energy and truth." M. Martini.
Matete Martini's works are frames in which the bodies or objects represented are distorted, multiplied, and fragmented. The result of the artist's research is an ever-renewed investigation of the external reality to find new levels of personal perception. An intrinsic characteristic of perception is the changing, a renewal of the gaze in front of the world, and Matete constantly investigates new ways of grasping it. For this reason, she studies the subjects of her canvas in bars and other social gathering places, a preliminary but fundamental moment that for the development of her works she calls "people watching." Her references are the futuristic school and metaphysical painting, particularly De Chirico, Mario Sironi, and Giacomo Balla. Matete's works are a fragmented instant, enclosed in the impossibility to be grasped in its totality and therefore captured through multiplicity. Another fundamental theme of her artistic production are objects, static elements that the artist deconstructs in her paintings, whose perception regularly varies through constant research of their position within the real and physical space. Currently, she is working on Progetto Incompleto Infinito in collaboration with Sotto Sale Project. It is a project potentially infinite that comprises studies and reconstructions of things and situations in her studio. The research on the perception of reality takes place within her own day-to-day, a consequence of today's life.
