MADE IN BED proudly introduces our newest Emerging Artists Co-Editor, Tobi Alexandra Falade!

 

Tobi Alexandra Falade is an artist-curator exploring ideas of identity and hybridity. Her practice aims to find spaces where different cultural borders meet, to form new cultures that combine their differences. In her artworks she paints and collages to create layered artworks conveying the complexity of diaspora identity, whilst her curatorial practice aims to imagine the futures of diasporic people, and provide unique perspectives on origins.  

From 2021-22 she was awarded the Barbican-iniva Curatorial Traineeship, where she supported the research and production of major art exhibitions such as Alice Neel, Hot of the Griddle. In 2023 she curated What Do We Become, an exhibition at the Barbican exploring notions of home with emerging artists. In 2022 she curated Rosa-Johan Uddoh’s, Pink Tongue, Brown Cheek at iniva, and featured the exhibition in Contemporary And.  

Tobi graduated with a BA in Fine Art: Painting from University of the Arts London, 2019 where she co-founded Platform Black, a community highlighting Black creatives. Her artworks have been shown across the UK and internationally at 1-54 Art Fair NYC and London, SABO Advisory Lagos, Nigeria, and is held in the Sharjah Art Foundation. In 2023, she was awarded the Arts Council Developing Your Creative Practice Grant which enabled her to further her research in Lagos, Nigeria. Tobi Alexandra Falade is currently studying a Masters of Contemporary Art, and she was awarded the Cultural Leaders Programme scholarship by Culture& and Sotheby’s Institute of Art 2024/25.
