Artist Statement

In the realms of both visual and audio works, the artist is interested in exploring the relationship between intentional and accidental, documentary and fictional, real world and imaginary. This concept is realized in the forms of painting and sound art, both of which are created in a studio and performative context. The materials incorporated in the construction of these works are in the most part found, and appropriated, rather than being designed for this specific purpose. The environment within which the artist works informs the work itself. Examples of this are the field recordings made and used in the production of his sound works, the found objects which are treated as musical instruments in his performances and the power tools appropriated for the construction of his visual work.

Biography

Visual Art:

kWeRk’s Splatter Vinyl and Splatter Canvases are created in both a studio and performance setting. The primary piece is the Splatter Vinyl, created by harnessing centrifugal forces generated by painting vinyl records, then spinning them at high speed, allowing the still wet paint to fly outwards from the centre. The secondary pieces, Splatter Canvases, are created by the paint hurtling from the spinning vinyl towards the canvases, installed either side of the artist. These secondary pieces are referred to as Accidental Art, another example of which is the white overalls in which the artist is dressed, which also are subject to paint splatters. Recycling of materials, lack of waste and the recognition of forces of nature being a part of the production process are central to the artist’s concept.

Sound Art:

kWeRk’s sound works exist primarily in 2 forms: Composition/Installations and Performance. Via both mediums the artist is interested in exploring the relationship between noise and our sense of music. His compositions incorporate field recordings with a documentary approach to sound, whereas the performances are improvised, using found objects as sound sources, often inviting the audience to join in and play. With the compositions he considers noise/sound as music and with the performances he treats everyday objects as musical instruments/sound sources.

kWeRk Sound Work - Everyday Ambience

This sound work plays with the everyday ambient sounds/noises emanating from an arts facility in Hackney. It takes the form of an audio composition, created using a sound palette consisting exclusively of field recordings gathered in and around the buildings, exploring the musicality of everyday ambience and out innate sense of melody and rhythm. Inspired by the Japanese word for music, Ongaku (organised sound), kWeRk translates this concept between sound and music.

kWeRk’s Everyday Ambience sound art piece is currently in the OTZ virtual gallery, opening soon.
