Bislacchi

Bislacchi's creations re-evaluate the canvas's support function, which actively participates in the creative process, becoming a constructive element of the work. In doing so, the physical dimension of his production investigates new forms of pictorial notion.

About

Bislacchi has been investigating and experimenting with the canvas's potential since his professional artistic education in fine arts at the City & Guilds of London Art School, where he graduated in 2018. The most significant influences of his artistic production are related in the 1950s and 1960s, particularly in Italian Informal Art, Abstract Expressionism, and Arte Povera, when artists began to question the formal presentation of painting and its purpose. Since his first artistic production, he has developed the interest and curiosity to manipulate the traditional support of painting. Experimenting with new possibilities of using the canvas, Bislacchi rethought the painting's idea by concentrating his investigations on the making processes, escaping from the realm of representation and the picture's physical constrictions. If Lucio Fontana cuts the canvas support, Bislacchi reconstructs it through motives, making it an integral part of the artistic process. The Wall of Canvas series develops from this idea of reconstruction and recreation. As the title suggests, the creative process refers to the symbolic construction of the canvas wall through hand-twisted strips of painted canvas that individually stretched over the painting's support according to vertical or horizontal arrangements. Reconstructing the painting from scratch, Bislacchi translates it into a symbolic construction model that he strongly associates with the idea of a mural structure made with canvas and paints instead of lime and brick. The series is born from one of his most significant experiences, a one-month residency program at PADA Studios near Lisbon, Portugal.
