Anouchka Gerard
“We contemplate the ravages of time, and in our imagination, we scatter the rubble of the very buildings in which we live over the ground; in that moment solitude and silence prevail around us, we are the sole survivors of an entire nation that is no more.” - Denis Diderot.

About
Architecture is at the core of Anouchka’s works that strive to conceptualise the exponential growth of our cities and the immensity of our constructions relative to our own human scale. This idea stems from both fascination and fear of large-scale solid constructions which are increasingly becoming ingrained in our life and lifestyle. As the artist puts it, “the work can be seen as a warning, a "mise en garde", towards the dangers - environmental and psychological - of our species’ expansion and social organisation, and its impact on our ecosystem.”
Much of Anouchka’s work is characterised by the tension between utopian and dystopian shapes and dimensions to convey the startling contrast between the melodic character of her work on the one hand and the growth of inhospitable forms on the other. The artist believes that constructions are physical manifestations of our personal and collective aspirations, and as such her depicted structures can themselves be made similar to organic beings – they are cities much like the ones we live in but more organic and miniature.
In order to convey and deconstruct the language of the urban landscapes, Anouchka works in etching that is in itself a microscopical sculptural work which reveals the depth of surfaces. After coating wooden panels with several layers of acrylic paint, she applies oil paint on which she carves shapes with a metal point thereby revealing the depth of her works. That being said, Anouchka also experiments with digital mediums which enable her to build virtual constructions and animations.
Her latest work explores fluid bodies inside a fully-squared-off environment. She has also turned towards digital media which allows her to animate her virtual constructions.
Anouchka’s works have been exhibited at Copeland Gallery and displayed at Capsticks Offices. They are also due to be presented at her graduate show in 2021 at Wimbledon College of Arts.
About
Anouchka is a twenty-two-year-old French artist who is now living in London. After completing a foundation year in Paris, she graduated from Wimbledon College of Arts in 2020. Architecture is at the core of her creative exploration and she is particularly interested in our conflicting fascination and fear of artificial structures. She combines paint and engraving techniques to reveal the stratas and create textural effects. She believes that constructions express a physical manifestation of our personal and collective aspirations. Her work intends to make us reflect on our relationship with physical environments.
