About:
Mark is a British artist who specializes in landscape paintings. The artist lives in the English countryside near Glastonbury, and uses his surroundings as an endless source of inspiration. The lush greens of the fields and the brilliant blue sea often feature in his paintings. Mark gives careful attention to often-overlooked features in the world around us, frequently using discarded driftwood and natural materials as the canvas for his works.
Before working as an artist, Mark spent nearly twenty years working in a local plastics factory. His artistic journey took off when he was diagnosed with Autism and severe Dyslexia. Shortly after, he decided to pursue his dream of becoming an artist. Mark taught himself to paint, as he found it difficult to concentrate in traditional teaching methods. He credits the support of family and friends, as well as charities like SANE, as incredible aids in his career.
Recently, Mark has been focused on painting landscapes, particularly seascapes, onto recycled materials. The recycled materials have a dual purpose: he aims to both highlight the impact of climate change through his art and reduce his own impact. His Driftwood Collection featured paintings on old tiles, tree bark, fence posts and even window frames. The organic materials often mean his works weather and decay outside. As his career blossoms, Mark will continue to promote environmentally-friendly art as much as possible.
Outside of nature, Mark finds inspiration in the art of J. M. W. Turner and John Constable. The artist says he appreciates the mystical, dream-like quality in the work of those artists, and attempts to express a similar attention to nature. Like them, Mark’s art is very emotive. He even uses his fingers to soften and blend, removing all barriers between the artist and the art.
Mark also experiments with abstract art, and in 2020 created three paintings representing his mood at the time; despair, frustration and anxiety. These emotional works are, according to the artist, ‘explosive’. They have a strong visual impact.
Mark has found success in the art world, and has exhibited across the United Kingdom and Europe. In March 2021, he became an Ambassador for the charity 'Outside In’ - a group which aims to assist and promote disabled artists. He is currently working to establish a mentoring program which he hopes will encourage those who, like him, still have creative dreams to be realised.
