Kristy M Chan

Born in 1997, Kristy M Chan is an artist from Hong Kong. After trying a variety of media through her artistic path, she returned to the vibrant and kaleidoscopic oil paints which allow her to enter into an unpredictable realm during the process of her artistic production.

About:

If there’s a word to summarise the theme Chan explores within her works of art, it must be “autobiographical”. Adrift in the dynamic city of London thousands of miles away from home, she continues to explore her own identity which is shaped by the intertwined Eastern and Western cultures, and then layer her memories and emotions onto the canvas itself.

Chan completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Slade School of Fine Art, UCL and acquired a MA in Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s Institute of Art. Studying at Sotheby’s Institute bred a breadth of her vision and understanding to various artistic practices and representations, therefore allowed her to reflect on her own artistic practices. She then decided to shift from figurative and abstract representations.

Floral arrangement has played a quintessential part of Chan’s artistic development. She had been taken to Ikebana classes when she was eight. Surrounded by the vibrant colours of the flowers and the teaching of how to arrange flowers and the beauty of empty spaces, Kristy’s aesthetic taste was shaped thereafter.

Chan’s first solo exhibition, “Totally Not”, presented by The Artist Room Gallery raises questions concerning the individual’s relationship between the displaced self and the surrounding people and environment.

It’s like I’m my own flâneur, observing my own experiences with people, then layering these different memories on a canvas, or “stolen realities” as I like to call them.
