Biography
Exhibit69 was born in south London in 1980 and spent his formative years in USA, where he was exposed to arts and culture through his parent’s gallery and witnessing the burgeoning scene of hip hop. Returning to the UK during adolescence, life changed drastically with graffiti becoming his main outlet, to assist in escaping the lures of crime and gang culture.
Hand painting leather jackets and BDSM attire assisted this introverted artist, with extroverted tendencies, to express himself as an adult, leading to a painters assistant role with esteemed street artist D*Face.
Deep feelings and suppressed emotions were transferred onto various materials from canvas, marble and granite, to represent and navigate past traumas of depression through abandonment and the current challenges of life.
Inspiration is taken from a myriad of taboo subjects which nearly led to his early demise - eroticism, religion, drugs, oppression, mental health and the rebellion of the punk ethos which graffiti, comics and pop culture are used to create an eye-catching and distinct look to each piece created.
Exhibit69 has recently completed a collection of hand painted leather jackets and is currently working on a series of expressions which use famous song lyrics fused with forgotten superheroes to narrate the current state of affairs.
