MADE IN BED proudly introduces our newest Interviews Co-Editor, Alice Ji-Won Kim!

Alice Kim is a London-based writer and art historian specialising in curation, design history, and decolonial approaches to art. Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, she developed a deep appreciation for traditional craftsmanship and artistry, which continues to shape her critical and creative pursuits.

Alice holds a BA in Design for Art Direction from the University of the Arts London, where she explored the aesthetics and politics of display, space, and exhibition-making. Alongside her academic studies, she engaged in creative practices such as catalogue design and book arts, which she particularly enjoyed.

Her professional experience spans commercial galleries, art fairs, foundations, and museums across Seoul and London. These roles allowed her to witness and contribute to Seoul’s dynamic cultural growth, sparking her ambition to navigate the multifaceted ecosystem of the art world first-hand. With this foundation, Alice seeks to bridge scholarly research with practical engagement, aspiring to write critical reflections on the contemporary art industry informed by her lived experiences.

Currently pursuing an MA in Fine and Decorative Art and Design at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, Alice continues to build her academic expertise, revisiting artworks through a decolonial lens. Her research examines cultural hybridity and the political frameworks underpinning modernist narratives, broadening the understanding of postcolonial conditions and their impact on art and exhibitions. Through detailed analysis and writing, she unpacks the complexities of cultural narratives, presenting her insights with clarity and nuance.

As the editor of the Interviews column at MADE IN BED, Alice aims to use her platform to document contemporary art movements, focusing on Asian diasporic narratives and the practice of care. Combining academic rigour with professional insight, she fosters meaningful dialogue within the art world, challenging dominant narratives.

In her free time, Alice enjoys travelling, exploring independent bookstores, and taking long walks around London. These walks often become cherished moments to call her mum and sister, sharing stories about her daily life and enjoying light-hearted conversation.
